(Quince añ era) - the word comes from the Spanish language. The meaning is very simple and is defined with the first part of the word, “Quince” meaning the number 15, “años” meaning years, “era” meaning the girl or “ero” for a guy. The Quinceañera traces its roots throughout the history of the southwest to the unity of the Spanish and Aztec cultures. Many people have described different scenarios concerning the origin of this tradition, they all lead back to history. This “Coming of Age” celebration has come a long way. The Aztecs sent young boys into the jungle for weeks on end as a ritual to become men on their own, thus, assuring their survival. When both cultures merged, the “Coming of Age” celebration became a CATHOLIC celebrated event Today’s celebrations are still celebrated within the Catholic community, however, studies show that many different religions and denominations all over the world celebrate the “coming of age” with special events. They are blending other cultures with theirs and making it their own.
